After fooling around with ICS' Bind DNS and their DHCP the other day (well two weeks ago) I can proudly say I got dhcpd adding and removing DNS records. After spending hours searching on Google none of the instuctions I found worked... After just few minutes reading through the sample files (and fixing 1 evil typo of mine) everything was working... This is the first time this happens - it was always the docs that wasted my time.

But that wasn't enough time wasted. Just few hours of DHCP+DNS happiness the hard drive of my laptop started making strange noises, LED went on, and poor thing locked up for good. Doh! Just few months ago one of the hard drives in my P4 died the same way... But this time around getting the data off wasn't such an easy task as the hard drive didn't get recognized on boot up. On one of the rare occasions it did start up alright I managed to boot off one Knoppix CD I had laying around. I decided to do a badblocks check first but after all the banging and grinding there were none! So if there are no badblocks I should be able to read my partitions with dd no problem, right? Wrong. Was getting all sorts of IDE/DMA timeouts and such after few gigs. It was time for dd_rescue which saved the day again! And I didn't get a single error... This is the 3rd time I'm saving data from a failed hard drive with dd_rescue. Thanks to Kurt Garloff for writing this wonderful program.

After reading this article I couldn't resist putting up a link to this Novell page. Way to go Novell!!! It was time someone "big" finally put up a response to the M$ BULLSHIT.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Yay! I haven't posted anything here for almost an year... Been quite busy with work, school, and other stuff. Wasted lots of time while stuck in traffic on my way to/from work. There were also ongoing constructions and fence building around the house. Wasted lots of valuable time goofing around with stuff like drilling a screwed up DVD and scanning it to see what it would look like.

Also enjoyed playing with the new toys I got (as you can see above). Finally built myself a new P4 box (well that was back in march I believe) to replace my crappy old athlon that pissed me off with its random lockups and after it trashed the root partition's filesystem. Bought a scanner, a dvd burner, a new video card, 2 USB flash sticks, zalman heatsink, new display and DVD/CDRW drive for the laptop, wireless gear, and other small things. There was a good amout of time and spendings that went for the car as well. After I hit the 250K clicks I had to replace this & that...

I still have to fix few bugs in Gv4l pending for quite a while. I'll try to get to that and I'll update the dvdcopy script one of these days I hope.
